Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this for?
Are you a prop maker, master, artisan, supervisor, assistant, or runner? Then it’s for you. If you don’t know what your title is….that PROPably means it’s props. And we’re not just for theater – associated industries are also welcome!
How do I join?
Just fill out this short application!
You can also drop us a line at info@thepropguild.com or head over to our contact page. Membership is currently free, but we do ask that you are a current or aspiring props professional. (Students – this includes you!)
While all props persons are welcome, please note that geographically our focus is New York based.
Do I have to pay for this?
Currently membership is free. We do plan to ask for dues as we grow to fund this very website and to expand programming such as seminars, salons, and gatherings (remember gatherings?). We’ll let you know well in advance what these fees will be and promise it will be flexible to accommodate all.
What do I get access to when I join?
-
Knowledge, community, mutual aid, and lots more
-
Our slack channel – a place to connect with colleagues, ask weird questions, share ideas and findings, and of course post pictures of your pets. We would like to see your pets.
-
Sharing is caring: have a sofa that needs a good home? There’s probably someone looking for just such a sofa. And you can connect with that someone here!
-
You’ll also get access to a growing list of resources like New York shopping maps, suggested online vendors, and news about fun and exciting new products.
-
Events (event-ually!)
Can I help?
We’re all about collaboration! Drop us a line at info@thepropguild.com or head over to our contact page. If you have specific talents or interests to contribute, let us know and we’ll plug you in as Guild projects come up.
What about fees and wage transparency?
We are not a union and cannot collective bargain. What we can do is empower members by providing education, information on contract structure and negotiation, and by uplifting each other through mutual aid. If you’d like to know more about this, feel free to ask: we’ve learned more about antitrust law than we ever wanted to know. If you want to read up on the specifics yourself, the Federal Trade Commission has information on price fixing, anti-trust in regards to trade associations, bid rigging, and group boycotts among other things.
What is a prop?
If you have to ask, this may not be the guild for you.
What is a prop master?
Probably very sleep deprived.
Who are you people?
The Guild was founded by Claire Kavanah, Rachel M F Kenner, Amanda Perry, Ricola Wille, and Alexander “Almonds” Wylie. What, you’ve never heard of us?! You can find out more here.
